Ray - no Chipotle here. But I could walk over to the neighborhood restaurant, order a large schnitzel mit frites (breaded pork cutlet with french fries), then wash it down with a few hefeweizen to add up to that 1,000 calories.

The cupcakes sound intriguing. I managed three slices of pumpkin pie the other day. Poor timing on my part, since this is a recovery week.

But life's too short.

Brent - very true. And that's a piece that eludes me. If I were to follow conventional wisdom, the long run should be at 1-2 minutes slower than marathon pace. Then the following day the recovery run should be 1-2 minutes slower than that. That's a very tough run, especially if it's going to be 6-8 miles, because it's borderline walking. For me, all that does is train me to run slower. So instead I prefer to focus on the toughest part of all, running "fast" when the body is tired and sore, just like the closing miles of a marathon+.

Glad to share, Jamie. It's a place that should be on everyone's list to visit and contemplate.

Hey, what are you saying? I'm old? ;^p

Yep, that experience is a great thing. That's why I'm amazed at folks that say "I don't understand why I'm hurt. I followed the training plan in (pick a magazine name)".

It sounds like what you need is a Chipotle. At 1,000 clean calories a pop - you're golden for refueling.

Or...a box of cupcakes will do the trick.

I think some other folks do a long run followed up with semi-long run, but they do that second one at a recovery pace.

Thanks for sharing, Bill. I went to Dachau when I was 16. I remember it as a very moving experience.

It's been a while, Bill!

Funny how conventional wisdom doesn't work for everyone, isn't it? Makes you wonder how it got to be conventional in the first place. It's cool that you've been able to work out on your own what works for you. Guess that's one of the benefits that comes with age.

I've been going back and forth between doing a spring 50k. I'm just too much of a wuss now and the thought of long days running in the snow (trail shoes) or with snoewhoes is just...tooo....exhausting. It's so much easier to to sit here and read blogs. :)

I've felt for some time, that there are certain events, and certain people that can't be captured by monuments or tourist stops… those are only for the innocent traveler who doesn't really know the subject. Though many people have expressed different opinions regarding concentration camps, I think it's enough to open a book and read about it. But I did like your picture of the wooden men. And for young people, who don't know of the horror, and might not know of it otherwise… maybe it's okay. I guess it depends on the person, and what is in his head when he arrives.
